Collybia brunneocephala

Collybia brunneocephala
(Brownit, Clitocybe brunneocephala)

Habitat

Riparian areas under Cottonwood and Elm. Spring to early Summer.

Description

A short stalky robust Clitocybe that grows late spring to early summer on wetter years. It is a close relative of the Blewit. Recently moved to Collybia (2023). They're technically edible but...I've been told that they taste terrible. They could also be confused with other poisonous mushrooms. People commonly confuse them for oyster mushrooms in the spring however the gills do not run down the stem. They do not grow from wood. They're also not clustered.
